Our commitment to further the compassionate, safe and responsible relationship between animals and people doesn’t just apply to adults. Our Humane Education program provides hands-on education to animal lovers of all ages.
Humane education topics
We believe compassion for animals tomorrow begins with education today.
Requests should be submitted at least three weeks in advance of the presentation, tour or service project.
There are no fees for presentations or tours but we ask that your group consider donating items from our wish list.
Topic: Animal Communication and Bite Prevention
Dog bites are among the top reasons for an emergency room visit for children. Any dog can bite, but the good news is that many dog bites are preventable. As humans, children or adults, it’s our responsibility to do what we can to prevent bites.

Compassionate treatment of animals and responsible pet ownership are at the cornerstone of Larimer Humane Society’s mission. We teach future pet owners the basics of caring for animal needs through fresh food, clean water, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, playtime and walks. We also provide education on the compassionate and humane treatment of animals.

Topic: Pet Overpopulation
Whether you’ve recently adopted a pet or you’re considering it, one of the most important health decisions you’ll make is to spay or neuter your cat or dog. In this lesson students will understand what overpopulation is and what we can do to assist keeping it under control. Using manipulatives and math, students will discover how pet overpopulation occurs.

Topic: Kindness & Compassion
What does it mean to be “compassionate”? Why is it important to be compassionate? There are many ways of showing kindness, including helping others, spending time with them, and understanding their wants and needs. Through creative storytelling, students will identify ways of showing kindness to animals.

Learn more about Larimer Humane Society. Ideal for corporate or school groups, this presentation explains what Larimer Humane Society does, how we are working to make Northern Colorado a great place for pets and people and how you can get involved to help.

Community Service Projects
As a nonprofit, Larimer Humane Society relies on the generosity of our community to help us fulfill our mission and believes community involvement and philanthropy can happen at any age. Through community service projects, such as making toys for shelter animals, we love showing youth and adults how easy it is to have a positive impact in their community by providing opportunities to play an active role in enriching the lives of the animals in need.
We ask that you give three weeks notice to plan a service event. Service for adults can include; toy making, cleaning and organization in the shelter and grounds work like pulling weeds and cleaning the dog parks. Service projects do not include contact with shelter pets. We may ask your group to collect and donate some supples for toy making.

Critter camp
Our week-long and mini one-day Critter Camps offer hands-on learning for kids ages 7 to 12 on topics such as bite prevention, careers in animal welfare, responsible treatment and care of animals and general information on Larimer Humane Society and how your students, group or organization can help make Northern Colorado a great place for pets.

Shelter tours
Come see our mission in action! We offer community tours to groups and classes from age 5- Adult. Tours include a guided walk through our shelter with the opportunity to add a humane education lesson. Tours last approximately one hour and include the opportunity to see adoptable animals but does not include animal handling.
Tour groups consist of 12 adults or children. Youth groups must have at least one adult chaperone per 12 children. Larger groups will be split into smaller tour groups of no more than 12.
