Making our community great for pets and the people who love them
Admissions and sheltering
All animals deserve a safe haven and to have their care and treatment guided by the Five Freedoms. As an open admission shelter for companion animals, we are able to accept domesticated animals the size of a goat or smaller. Each year, more than 6,000 animals come through our doors. Each of these animals that enter our shelter receives quality food, vaccinations and medical care, a clean kennel, socialization, walks, playtime, cuddles and training; all delivered with love.
Animal Protection & Control
Our Animal Protection and Control team works around-the-clock to ensure Northern Colorado is a great place for pets and people alike. We are contracted with the City of Fort Collins, City of Loveland and unincorporated areas of Larimer County to enforce and uphold local and state animal protection and control laws and ordinances. Lost and found
Your pet is an important member of the family, and we are committed to keeping animals in homes with the families who love them. We offer temporary safe haven to lost animals until they can be reunited with their families.
Owner surrender
Unfortunately, there are times when owners can no longer care for their pet, and we know how difficult a decision surrendering a pet can be. We are here to help people with the process of re-homing their pet. Get help re-homing your pet.
End-of-life services
There are times when animals need to be humanely euthanized due to age, medical issues or other reasons. Saying goodbye to your best friend is never easy. We are here for you during this difficult process. Learn more.
Adoption
Larimer Humane Society is a place where animals and people find love. Each year we are proud to help thousands of homeless animals find loving new families. Find your new best friend.
Veterinary services
The health and overall well-being of the animals in our care is our number-one priority. Our skilled veterinary staff works to heal sick animals, prevent disease and reduce pet overpopulation. Every day our veterinary staff saves lives and ensures they are free from pain, injury and disease.
Animal care
Our Animal Care staff are the heartbeat of the shelter. Their dedication and compassion ensure the basic needs of each and every animal in our care is met. They provide animals freedom from hunger and thirst through quality food and clean water and freedom from discomfort by ensuring they always have a clean kennel with a comfortable resting area.
Foster care
Not every animal that comes to us is ready to be adopted. Some need time to grow. Others to recover from sickness or illness. And others must learn better behavior. Our foster care program is supported by volunteers providing the love and nurturing these animals need to prepare them for their new families. By taking them into their home on a temporary basis, our fosters help us save the lives of these special-needs animals and alleviate overcrowding at the shelter. Become a foster volunteer.
Transfer program
Because of amazing strides in animal welfare in Colorado, we can look beyond the borders of our county and state to help other communities in need. We transfer animals into our shelter from communities that are still struggling with pet overpopulation and are running out of time and space to help animals in need.
Behavior and enrichment
Our knowledgeable behavior and enrichment team help make what can be an incredibly stressful time in an animal’s life is as peaceful as possible, while helping them become the best versions of themselves through training and enrichment. They provide animals in our care the freedom to express normal behavior by providing time and space for play, socialization with humans and other animals, training, and mental stimulation.
Pet licensing
We work to ensure every pet is current with rabies vaccinations and has a license—their “ticket home.” License your pet.
Humane education
We believe compassion for animals tomorrow begins with our youth today. That’s why our humane education program provides hands-on learning for all ages, promotes positive relationships with animals and empowers young people to make a difference for animals in their community. Community outreach
We educate and inform residents about animal welfare and safety at events throughout the community. View our calendar of upcoming events.
Volunteer program
Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. We rely on a group of more than 600 volunteers to provide second chances to the nearly 6,000 animals that come through our doors each year. Volunteers touch every aspect of our organization, and we simply couldn’t do it without them. Sign up for volunteer orientation.
Animal welfare legislation
Larimer Humane Society supports animal-friendly legislation and works collaboratively with local and regional agencies around the state to improve the quality of life for all animals
